What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a form of skin treatment that uses a controlled flow of medical-grade aluminium oxide crystals to remove dead skin cells. The crystals exfoliate and reveal fresh skin cells on the surface, leaving your skin feeling soft and smooth.

At the start of your microdermabrasion treatment, your skin will be cleansed and prepped before your practitioner applies the crystals to your skin using a handpiece.

Whilst the crystals gently buff your skin, the gentle vacuum stimulates the underlying epidermis to promote new collagen production – invigorating blood flow to the surface. Your practitioner will then apply a mask and serums post-treatment to leave your skin feeling hydrated and silky smooth. Lastly, an SPF is applied.

What does microdermabrasion do for your skin?

Microdermabrasion is one of our favourite treatments for a few reasons as not only are the results are instant, but also because your practitioner can combine microdermabrasion treatment with our skin peels to get even more impressive results.

Microdermabrasion is also great to have in between other treatments to remove the top layer of dead skin so can be alternated with skin peels laser and EDS or dermaroller to enhance the results even further.

As it’s a quick and easy treatment to perform with no recovery time, a microdermabrasion treatment can fit into your lunch break. You could even come in after work to get that deep cleansed and super smooth feeling ready for an evening out or an event (or come in to get that feeling just because you want to!).

We can also perform microdermabrasion on your back to remove dead skin cells and leave your skin silky smooth.

What areas of my body can be treated with microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion treatment is great for the face, but can also be performed in other areas of your body. The most common of these is the back, as this is an area which often gets forgotten about, which can lead to a build-up of excess dead skin cells over time. Other hard to reach areas can suffer in this way too, leaving your skin looking dull. Microdermabrasion can tackle dull skin by removing the dead skin cells from these trickier areas, leaving your skin feeling soft and smooth.

What results can I expect from microdermabrasion?

Immediately after your microdermabrasion treatment, your skin will feel smooth and refreshed. Your skin will also look brighter, as the dead skin cells will have been exfoliated off, leaving fresh skin with renewed skin cells. Sometimes immediately after treatment the skin can appear flushed – this is due to the increased blood flow on the surface of the skin, which will create new collagen and stimulate hydration.

How do I prepare for microdermabrasion?

Prior to microdermabrasion, you should advise your clinic of any recent sun exposure, or application of fake tan. Avoid using retinol, glycolic or salicylic acid products for 1 – 2 weeks prior to a microdermabrasion treatment.

How many microdermabrasion treatments will I need?

Depending on your concern, the number of treatments will be advised in your consultation. Microdermabrasion is a great starting treatment for many skin concerns, including dull and lifeless skin. If you are looking to achieve maximum results, a course of treatments is needed between 3 – 6 sessions, and then to progress onto other types of treatments which will enhance the skin further.
